"As a child, I can remember making my own kites out of wrapping paper, gift
wrap or oil cloth. At times, without other resources, I would use
neckties as the tail.
After hours of work and anxiety and when air time came, unfortunately most of them
flopped, dipped, or did barrel-rolls, and some didn't even get off the ground! But some,
miraculously, flew beautifully. The memory of my early life and its pleasant play
times, and a grand lust for root beer along with my present love of the oceans and
seas, beaches, beach grass, dunes, clouds, gulls, and old Nantucket beach cottages all
came together affectionately to form the painting: Rootbeer Break at the Butterfields. |
