Print Description:
Hickoryhaven Canal is that perfect spot that exists in everyone's imagination: just the right place to pass happy hours on a cold winter's day.

Yet in Charles Wysocki's life, Hickoryhaven really does exist. As a boy, he was invited to visit an uncle who had a cabin on a lake in Michigan. There was a canal behind the cabin, a canal that - to the delight of locals - was frozen. As Wysocki says, "Skating on the canal became a party from early morning until nightfall. People sang, played instruments, built fires, sold goodies, and obviously had a grand time."

In spite of the cold, the occasion was warm and pleasant; and it fixed itself in the painter's memory - awaiting the day when it would again become reality on canvas.
