The stable was quiet and the world unaware, yet heaven had come down to earth. In The Night When Christ Was Born, Arnold Friberg brings the Nativity to life. He doesn't picture it as a stereotypical scene, but as a sacred turning point in history. At first glance, it's a humble manger: Mary, Joseph and the child. But look closer. A boy in camel hair cradles a lamb – a nod to John the Baptist. A wooden beam before the manger rises like a cross. In the shadows, a faint form alludes to the betrayal still to come.
Friberg wasn't merely painting the birth of Christ, he painted the whole story from beginning to end. This is the night that changed the world.
"Since I was a boy, I have always loved the Bible stories of that first Christmas. But this new
painting has special roots from way back in the 6th grade of grammar school, when for our Christmas
program our little glee club sang the old revered carol 'Cantique de Noel'. Even at that early
age, as I listened I was transfixed, for the words they sang sent through my heart a deep thrill
I have never ceased to feel when I hear those words - 'O night divine, O night when Christ was born'."
"Now, after all these years, in painting this picture I have striven to give pictorial expression to
those stirring words I heard so long ago.
It is not just the figures - the shepherds, the holy family, the animals, but rather it is the mystic
silence, the warm and holy light that fills that earthy stable, the awesome stillness that inspired
'Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht'. It is for this solemn reason that rather than the usual title 'The
Nativity', this picture is reverently titled 'The Night When Christ Was Born'."
--- Arnold Friberg
"And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the
shepherds said one to another, 'Let us go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing
which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.' And they came with haste,
and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger." – Luke 2:15-16
